Product Care
Excessive dampness, dryness, heat or cold, as well as prolonged exposure to strong sunlight are the enemies of fine wood furniture and should be avoided. Strong sunlight may cause fading. Some rubber or plastic mats intended to protect a table from hot dishes may soften or stain a finish. Mr Brown recommends leather, cork, or felt protectors. Plan to dust your furniture regularly with a soft dry cloth. You may also use a moist (but not wet) cloth to remove fingerprints. For stubborn marks or smears, Mr Brown advises adding mild soap/detergent to the water. Always wipe up spilled liquids immediately with a clean damp cloth, and finish the job with a soft dry cloth. Never use any abrasive chemical (acidic or alkaline) cleaners or abrasive cloth/pads. Scratches and dulling can be improved with a non-silicone wax. A soft or cream wax restores shine. A harder wax produces more shine. Mr Brown advises white or clear wax for light finishes and brown wax for darker finishes. As for deep scratches… touch-up pens will improve appearance, but not eliminate the scratch itself. If more intensive therapy is needed, please contact a qualified furniture restorer. Most velvets are treated with a crush-resistant and stain-repellant finish. Occasional vacuuming keeps the velvet fibers free of dust and debris. Most stains can be blotted or wiped away with a damp cloth or paper towel. Spot cleaning is recommended for dried stains. Test an inconspicuous area first. Using a gentle soap and water or a commercial dry cleaning product, start from the outside of the stain, working your way to the middle. Once dry, brush in the direction of the pile with a soft dry brush to restore the loft. Repeat the process if necessary. Antiquing or light bruising is natural to velvet. To improve marks, light steaming or gentle brushing in the direction of the pile is recommended. Know that some marks may never disappear. This is a coveted attribute, not a defect. Like leather, velvet becomes more luxurious over time.
